    (Sp. model spelled same [almagre] < Spanish almagra 'rust' < Arabic al-magra 'the red earth')
       Carlisle: 1893. An early Spanish meaning for this Arabic term was iron oxide (rust) or oxidation. It also came to signify iron oxide as a pigment in clay. In the Southwest the term is closer to the original Arabic, referring to red earth or Indian red (where iron oxide may or may not be the principal pigment), used to paint adobe walls and houses. Cowboys familiar with construction methods and techniques that the Spaniards in the Old World learned from the Moors would have known this term also.

    ( mexcal or mezcal [meskál] < Nahuatl metl 'maguey' and (i) xcalli 'stew' < ixcalhuia 'to cook or boil something.' The original meaning of this term refers to an intoxicating drink obtained from the maguey or agave plant)
       1) New Mexico: 1831. Another name for the agave plant. Also refers to the root or the young bud stalk of the plant used for food.
        Alternate forms: mascal, mescale, mezcal, muscal, muscale.
       2) California: 1833. An intoxicating drink prepared with the fermented juice or pulp of the agave plant. By extension, any intoxicating drink.
        Also called mescal liquor.
       3) Southwest: 1887. Another name for the peyote plant. See peyote.
       4) According to Blevins, this term also applies to a food prepared from mescal1. The DRAE references mezcal as a variety of agave or a liquor obtained by fermenting and distilling the heads of the plant. Santamaría defines mexcal (or mezcal) as an alcoholic drink extracted by distilling the fleshy leaf or the head of some species of maguey. He notes that the species used for making the drink are Agave mexicana, A. wixlinzeni, A. desipiens. The drink is popular in central and northern Mexico as well as in New Mexico and Texas.

       Bentley: 1847. A mat made from palm leaves used to protect saddle-packs from the rain. Bentley notes that humbler Mexicans use these mats for floor coverings. This term also refers to a bag made from the same material, used for rice, coffee, and other commodities. Santamaría glosses petate as a borrowing from the Aztec language for a mat woven from palm-leaf strips. He notes that such mats are used throughout the continent, generally for the purpose of sleeping on them. Islas concurs, and adds that these mats can also be made from reeds or bulrushes. Perhaps a cowpoke or two, injured or lost, found shelter in a jacal and slept on a petate.

    Электрическая машина, служит для преобразования механической энергии в электрическую и электрической в механическую, а также электрической энергии в электрическую же, отличающуюся по напряжению, роду тока, частоте и другим параметрам. Действие Э. м. основано на использовании явления электромагнитной индукции и законов, определяющих взаимодействие электрических токов и магнитных полей.
    Для преобразования механической энергии в электрическую служат генераторы электромашинные, электрической энергии в механическую — двигатели электрические. Каждая из этих машин (в соответствии с Ленца правилом) энергетически обратима, т. е. может работать как в генераторном, так и в двигательном режиме; однако выпускаемые промышленностью Э. м. обычно предназначены для выполнения определённой работы (см. также Переменного тока машина, Постоянного тока машина, Асинхронная электрическая машина, Синхронная машина, Коллекторная машина).
    Преобразования рода тока, частоты, числа фаз, напряжения осуществляют электромашинными преобразователями(см. Преобразовательная техника), электромашинными усилителями, трансформаторами электрическими.
    К Э. м. относят также машины специального назначения, например тахогенератор, тяговый электродвигатель.
